Introductory Robotic Workshop @ SMJK Chung Hwa Confucian

1. Report

            Due to the overwhelming good response we received during our first attempt in bringing robotic workshop to SMK Paya Keladi, USM IEEE Student Branch had organized the second robotic workshop in which its target group is still secondary school students. It is worth to mention that this programme again had obtained the endorsement from the JPN and sponsored by CAS society. Mr Yong Bang Ming was the organizing chairman together with Dr. Mohd Tafir bin Mustaffaand and Dr. Rosmiwatibt Mohd Mokhtar as the project advisor of this robotic workshop.

        The organizing committee gathered at 7.30am and had breakfast together at Greenland McD. After that, they started preparing for this robotic workshop at 8AM and the workshop was kick started officially at 9AM at the SMJK Chung Hwa Confucian. The workshop started with welcoming and introduction speech given by Dr. Rosmiwatibt Mohd Mokhtar and Dr. Mohd Tafir bin Mustaffa respectively, followed by Robotic Builders Starter Guide presented by Mr. Yong Bang Ming. The students was then been divide into 4 small groups which will be assigned further by each group tutors.

            In each group, the students were first been brief about how to use breadboard and how to connect a simple LED circuit. The students was also given chance to try themselves in constructing the simple LED circuit. Most students were excited for this small practical session as they never played with those electronics components before. The basic briefing was last for about 1 hour and 15 minutes and it followed by a hands on session. Each students in the group was required to design their own robot with the technical support from each group tutors. The time given for the robot fabrication was 2 hours. It is worth mention that the materials used in preparing the robot body was all consist of used card board and some unwanted boxes in order to instill the recycle concept in the students mind.

            After completing the robot fabrication, they had a small break session which about 45 minute. After refreshing themselves, each group was required to present their design to the tutors and the school teachers. Through each group presentation, it can be seen that the student in SMJK Chung Hwa Confucian was creative and the robot created by every group can function perfectly. After the presentation session finished, a small exhibition was held followed by prize giving ceremony to each of the student group. The workshop finished up with the group photograph session and exchange of souvenir between the SMJK Chung Hwa Confucian and USM IEEE student branch.

2.00PM – 2.15PM Mini demonstration of some of USM student project to the student.
2.15PM – 2.45PM Result release, briefing for the 10 chosen students and photo session.

4. Outcome

            From the workshop, 5 robots were creatively developed by the students. The workshop was not only able to demonstrate the potential creativity of the students, but also succeeded in improving student in the aspect of knowledge gain, communication skill, working as a group, presentation skill etc. Thus, the objective to expose students with knowledge in robotics and develop interest to electrical and electronic engineering field was achieved.

6. Conclusion

Overall, the activity was a veritable successful with the school administrations and students giving praise and good feedbacks on the event. This will become a good drive for the USM IEEE Student Branch to have more of such event in the future.
