2016 Fun Engineering Session Organized by IEEE CASS Malaysia Chapter and FOE, MMU

On 20th October 2016, IEEE CASS Malaysia together with Faculty of Engineering (FOE) Multimedia University (MMU) organized a School Program entitled 2016 Fun Engineering Session which is intended for secondary school students. A total of 75 Form 4 students and 3 teachers from a local school, Sekolah Seri Puteri Cyberjaya were brought in to FOE MMU to participate in the program. The program was held to engage and inspire young students especially girls in high schools to take up Engineering Career.

The program starts with an overview of MMU, followed by a short talk on “What is Engineering? Why encourage female students to consider this field?” and a brief introduction to IEEE CASS Malaysia Chapter Professional Development. At the end of the briefing, students were moved to 2 laboratories where they were grouped into smaller groups and given opportunity to learn, explore and use the Chumbaka kit. Students are requested to use their own creativity and the skills which they have just learnt and built a tech art project. Materials such as paper plates, paper cups, sticks and marker pens were provided for this activity. It was interesting to see how the students work together to build some rotary project making us of a servo motor provided. Top 5 groups received prizes.

2016 IEEE CAS DLP Lecture: Advances in Image/Video Compression using Graph Transforms

Thursday, December 1st, 2016

IEEE CAS DLP Lecture on Advances in Image/Video Compression using Graph Transforms has been presented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Enrico Magli from Politecnico di Torino, Italy. The lecture was held on 16 May 2016 from 10:00 a.m to 12:00 p.m in the Tower Block Meeting Room, Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Putra Malaysia. The co-organizer of this lecture are the Institute of Advanced Technology and, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, UPM. Prior to the lecture, Dr. Enrico and participants enjoyed the local breakfast sponsored by IEEE CAS Malaysia Chapter.

The lecture describes technically on recent developments in several areas of image and video compression employing new signal processing and computer vision techniques. After an initial discussion about the future of video compression, the talk centred on graph transforms. The presenter at first addressed the design of graph transforms achieving very good compression efficiency on both piecewise-smooth and natural images, and their application to image compression and intra-frame video compression. Then, he introduced a new video compression paradigm that replaces macro blocks with super pixels, and employs a graph transform to encode each super pixel. Finally, he described a new and very efficient transform, called “steerable” DCT, which is able to orient the DCT basis functions spatially and spectrally so as to adapt to directional features of the block being encoded.

The participations from students, researchers and lectures are quite impressive with the total number of more than 40 participants. The session continued with Q&A after the presentation where the participants and speaker discussed technically on image processing techniques.

At the end of event, a group photo was taken and CASS Malaysia committee members accompanied the speaker for local lunch.

2016 UPM Engineering Science Fair – Discovering Engineering

Thursday, December 1st, 2016

Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Faculty of Engineering : This year on September, 27th , 2016, Faculty of Engineering UPM had organized a science fair event for school kids. The IEEE CAS Society Malaysia has joined the Robotic Club UPM to open the booth at the event.

The student volunteers introduced the school kids about robots and demonstrated how solar cells work to power the robot. Through this activity, they also took the opportunity to introduce school kids to the earliest world known scientists Hebattullah bin Malaka Al-Baghdadi and Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi (Father of Modern Algebra and Algorithm).

The theme for the IEEE CASS booth activity was “Science is worth exploring! Go out there my little sunshine! With the biggest dreams in the world!”. These school kids had shown great interests in science while doing activity. The science fair is definitely a good platform for kids giving them a great opportunity to learn about science outside of books and homework.

2016 LEGO Robotics Workshop

Thursday, December 1st, 2016

May 31st to June 1st 2016, IEEE CASS Malaysia together with Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Robotic Club and a local school, Sekolah Kebangsaan Bandar Baru Bangi Jalan 2 organized a LEGO Robotics workshop intended for school students of the age group 7 to 12 years in conjunction with the public school holiday. A total of 50 students from a few states in Malaysia, mostly from neighbouring states, Putrajaya and Selangor joined the 2 days workshop.

The objectives of this workshop are to provide opportunities and exposure to the school students on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) through robotic design and to infuse enthusiasm and interest in invention and innovation.

The workshop starts with an interesting introduction to the LEGO Mindstorm NXT programmable robotic kit, followed by a few short training modules on creating robot of several categories namely soccer robot and obstacle avoidance robot. On the second day of the workshop, students were grouped into smaller groups and given opportunities to compete in a soccer robot match and obstacle avoidance robot competition, putting their knowledge and creativity to the test. It was interesting to see how these school students work together coming up with interesting solutions for the matches and competitions. Top 3 groups received prizes from IEEE CAS Malaysia.

The school students are very pleased with the workshop, thanks to the team of cheerful and engaging workshop instructors. To IEEE CAS Malaysia delight, majority of them are excited to join this workshop in the future.
